Hello everyone. Welcome back. Thank you for reading and thank you to Crazytown for letting it happen.
Today's topic I could go on about forever because it's about my favorite place I've never been: Liberia. I don't know who knows what, so I can give a rundown. I'll try to be brief.
In the early 19th century there was a "back-to-Africa" movement with the idea that freed African-American slaves should go "back" to Africa. Never mind that the large majority of American slaves were born in the US by this time and had little or no ties to Africa except ancestry. The British had already used free blacks to colonize Sierra Leone. They even came up with the name Freetown.
Now the Americans made an unholy alliance called the American Colonization Society, which put abolitionists and slaveowners on the same team...the team of "Black people shouldn't be in America." The Great Emancipator was a fan (for a while).
