On this edition of INSIDE GAY CINEMA, Sal Bardo talks barebacking, monogamy, and Google's ad policies,
by David Davila (musical theatre writer)
I don't quite remember how I heard about Sal Bardo or his film CHASER, but I do remember exactly how I felt when I watched it for the first time; understood. The film takes a quick and very intimate glance into the life of a school teacher who plays Russian roulette with his health by having bareback sex with lots of other gay men. I had recently written about my own journey with barebacking here on the blog, when I caught the film, and the material hit me deep (pun intended - and keep in mind this was BEFORE the age of PreP). What strikes me most about the film, besides the gorgeous cinematography, editing, and hot gay men at every glance, was the hypothesis that lay at the film's core; that "bareback chasers" or "cum dumps" as the internet so affectionately calls them are merely dealing with their depression in the same fashion as "cutters."
I've spent a long part of my life writing an epic poem about my own sexual encounters and their connections to my mortality, and so I made it a point to introduce myself to Mr. Bardo and follow his career closely. It was to my delight to find out that the CHASER was being released on Vimeo on Demand this week with extra footage, so I reached out to Sal and asked if he'd mind talking a little bit about the film and the journey that he took to create this moving piece of cinema.
